It was speculated that the company will launch Snapdragon 875 but the company leaped to Snapdragon 888 from Snapdragon 865 Plus. The company launched Snapdragon 888 instead of Snapdragon 875 because, in the Chinese culture, the number 888 symbolizes luck and prosperity. CPU:
Getting started with the CPU section, here the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 has Qualcomm Kryo 680 tri-cluster CPU that integrates 1 ARM Cortex-X1 Prime Core clocked at up to 2.84GHz, 3 Cortex-A78 Gold Cores at 2.40GHz, and 4 Cortex-A55 Silver Cores at 1.80GHz clock speed while in the Snapdragon 865 Plus, we also get a tri-cluster 64 bit Qualcomm Kryo 585 octa-core CPU that includes 1 ARM Cortex-A77 Prime Core ticking at 3.10GHz, 3 Cortex-A77 Gold Cores at 2.5GHz and 4 Cortex-A55 Silver Cores at 1.8GHz clock speed.
Here the CPU of Snapdragon 888 is 25% faster and 25% efficient in comparison to the CPU of Snapdragon 865 Plus. So in terms of CPU performance, the newer SD 888 is much better than the SD 865+.
GPU:
Moving to the GPU section, here for gaming the Snapdragon 888 features the Adreno 660 GPU while the Snapdragon 865 Plus has the Adreno 650 GPU. Manufacturing Process:
In this section, the newer Snapdragon 888 is fabricated on the 5nm process technology where the Snapdragon 865 Plus is built on the 7nm process technology. So in terms of power-efficiency, the Snapdragon 888 is more powerful and power-efficient in comparison to the Snapdragon 865 Plus.

Speaking of the newer Snapdragon 888, it features a Qualcomm Spectra 580 image signal processor which is a Triple 14-bit CV-ISP and features a hardware accelerator for computer vision. This ISP is capable of handling a single camera of up to 84MP with MFNR and ZSL and up to 200MP without MFNR & ZSL. In terms of dual camera, it can handle up to 64MP at30fps with MFNR & ZSL and up to 28MP triple camera at 30fps with MFNR & ZSL.
While on the other side, the Snapdragon 865 Plus has a Qualcomm Spectra 480 image signal processor which is a 14-bit dual ISP and supports up to a 25MP dual camera at 30fps with MFNR & ZSL and a single camera of up to 64MP at 30fps with MFNR & ZSL. It also can go up to 200MP without MFNR & ZSL.
Here the Snapdragon 888 has an upgraded Spectra 580 ISP over Spectra 480 of Snapdragon 865 Plus.
In this section, the Snapdragon 865 Plus supports quad-channel 16 bit up to 16GB LPDDR5 RAM at 2750MHz while the Snapdragon 888 can support quad-channel 16 bit up to 16GB LPDDR5 RAM at 3200MHz. In the case of storage, both chipsets support UFS 3.1 based storage.
In this section, both SD888 and SD865 Plus are the same. Both chipsets have support for up to 4K displays at 60Hz and QHD at 144Hz.
Artificial Intelligence:
Here also the Snapdragon 888 brings improvements over Snapdragon 865 Plus. Speaking of the Snapdragon 865 Plus, it has Qualcomm Hexagon 698 Processor coupled with Qualcomm Hexagon Scalar Accelerator, Hexagon Vector eXtensions (HVX), Hexagon Tensor Accelerator, and Qualcomm Sensing Hub.
While on the other hand, the Snapdragon 888 has Qualcomm Hexagon 780 Processor, 6th generation Qualcomm AI Engine and 2nd generation Qualcomm Sensing Hub. It is also equipped with Large shared AI memory, Qualcomm Hexagon Voice Assistant Accelerator, Hexagon Scalar Accelerator, Hexagon Vector eXtensions (HVX), and Qualcomm Hexagon Tensor Accelerator.
Connectivity
Here in the connectivity section, also the newer SD888 is upgraded. It has integrated Qualcomm Snapdragon X60 5G modem-RF system where the Snapdragon 865 Plus uses the external Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System. The Snapdragon 888 supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 technology where the Snapdragon 865 Plus supports up to Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ technology and Qualcomm Quick Charge AI technology. Bluetooth 5.2 is supported in both chipsets and the Snapdragon 888 supports Wi-Fi 6E while the Snapdragon 865 Plus supports Wi-Fi-6. Other features such as FM Radio, GPS, NFC, etc. are supported in both chipsets.
