Getting started with the CPU section, here both chipsets have an octa-core CPU based on 64-bit architecture. Speaking of the Snapdragon 678, it has a Qualcomm Kryo 460 AIE CPU that integrates 2 ARM Cortex-A76 Gold cores clocked at up to 2.20GHz and other 6 Cortex-A55 Silver cores at 1.80GHz clock speed while on the other hand, the Snapdragon 720G features a Qualcomm Kryo 465 AIE CPU that features 2 ARM Cortex-A76 Gold cores operating at up to 2.30GHz and other 6 Cortex-A55 Silver cores 1.80GHz clock speed.

Here the Snapdragon 720G has the Kryo 465 CPU which is an upgrade over the Kryo 460 of Snapdragon 678. The SD720G also has a better clock speed of its performance cores while the other 6 Cortex-A55 efficiency cores have the same clock speed on both chipsets.

So in terms of CPU processing, the Snapdragon 720G is an upgrade of Snapdragon 678 and features better CPU processing than the Snapdragon 678.

Moving on to the GPU section, here in the Snapdragon 678, we get an Adreno 612 GPU while the Snapdragon 720G features an Adreno 618 GPU which is also an upgrade of the Adreno 612 of the SD 678.

So in the case of gaming, again the Snapdragon 720G is ahead of the Snapdragon 678.

The Snapdragon 678 is manufactured using 11nm process technology same as Snapdragon 675 while the Snapdragon 720G is fabricated on 8nm process technology. Here also the Snapdragon 720G is more powerful and efficient than the Snapdragon 678.

Camera

Coming to the camera section, here the Snapdragon 678 features a Qualcomm Spectra 250L image signal processor which is a 14-bit dual ISP and supports up to 16MP + 16MP dual cameras at 30fps and a single camera of up to 25MP at 30fps with MFNR & ZSL. While with MFNR only, it can support up to 48MP single camera and up to 192MP single camera without MFNR & ZSL.

On the other side, the Snapdragon 720G has a Qualcomm Spectra 350L image signal processor which is also a 14-bit dual ISP and supports up to 16MP + 16MP dual cameras at 30fps and up to 32MP single camera at 30fps with MFNR & ZSL. By compromising with MFNR & ZSL, it can go up to 192MP.

Memory

Speaking of the Snapdragon 678, it has support for 16-bit dual-channel up to 8GB LPDDR4x RAM operating at up to 1866MHz while the Snapdragon 720G supports 16-bit dual-channel up to 8GB LPDDR4x RAM operating at up to 2133MHz.
Speaking of storage, both have support for eMMC 5.1 & UFS 2.1 based storage.

Display

In the display section, the Snapdragon 678 has support for up to Full HD+ displays with a maximum resolution of 2520×1080 pixel while the Snapdragon 720G supports up to Quad HD+ displays with a maximum resolution of 1440 x 3360 pixels.

Snapdragon 678 vs Snapdragon 720G: Artificial Intelligence

Speaking of the AI part, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G features the Qualcomm Hexagon 692 DSP coupled with Qualcomm Hexagon Tensor Accelerator, Qualcomm Sensing Hub, Hexagon Scalar Accelerator, and Qualcomm Hexagon Vector eXtensions (HVX).

While on the other hand, the Snapdragon 678 has Qualcomm Hexagon 685 DSP paired with Sensor low-power island (LPI), Qualcomm Hexagon Vector Processor, and Qualcomm Hexagon Vector eXtensions (HVX).

Here the Snapdragon 720G has the Hexagon 692 DSP which is an upgrade of the Hexagon 685 DSP of Snapdragon 678. So the AI Processing is also better in the Snapdragon 720G.

Speaking of the cellular modem, the Snapdragon 678 features the Qualcomm Snapdragon X12 LTE Modem while the Snapdragon 720G has a Qualcomm Snapdragon X15 LTE modem which is an upgraded version of the Snapdragon X12 of the Snapdragon 678.
Both chipsets support Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ technology for fast charging. The Snapdragon 720G has support for Qualcomm Quick Charge AI Technology also.
Other features like Dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS, FM Ratio, etc. are the same in both chipsets.
